Despite initial hesitations and difficulties, those involved in Ethnic Language Television gradually affirmed their resilience, creativity, and, especially, their passion and dedication in designing programs to serve ethnic minority communities across Vietnam.

Since January 1, 2016, the Ethnic Language Television Department has officially broadcast VTV5 Southwest, incorporating the Khmer ethnic language. The content of these programs comprehensively reflects the socio-economic aspects of the provinces in the Southwest and Southeast regions, meeting the increasing information and cultural needs of the Khmer ethnic people in the region

In implementing the project to enhance the production capacity of ethnic language television programs, over the years, the Ethnic Language Television Department has invested in specialized equipment systems for modern television, suitable for the operational nature of the production team at 64 local Radio and Television Stations. As a result, the quality of programs and the capacity of the production team for ethnic language programs at local radio and television stations have improved.

The investment in 11 MS-3200 systems from Datavideo at the end of 2023, through the project ” Invest in program production equipment for Khmer language ” of VTV5, has been handed over and put into use for 10 local Radio and Television Stations in the Southwest region of Vietnam (Can Tho, Soc Trang, Bac Lieu, Ca Mau, Hau Giang, Kien Giang, Tra Vinh, Tay Ninh, An Giang, Binh Phuoc). TVS is the sole entity providing, training, and delivering projects directly into the hands of end users. This will contribute to diversifying and enriching programs for the Khmer ethnic people, meeting their needs for receiving authentic information from Vietnam Goverment, Party and the State, as well as their demand for enjoying cultural and social programs.

The basic system came with 3 cameras capable of recording the program’s setting and can be expanded up to 10 UHD/4K or HD camera. Thanks to the Video Infrastructure always ready to connect to multiple external devices, the operators can add in other equipment like Dual Channel Character Generator or Added multi-channel slow motion system to utilize the OBvan for technically demanding productions such as: live football match with Multi-angle slow motion, Musical/ Talent shows, Sport or Culture events on large setting, …

Beside the high-quality Video recording capability, this OBVan is also came equipped with a Surround sound recording systems, able to carter to productions of musical performance with large number of instruments. This is achieved thanks to the processing and routing abilities of an audio mixer in coordination with an excellent signal processing infrastructure and high-quality processing and monitoring system.

The Van also includes a rich set of signal processing devices for external sources, capable of converting video quality from HD to UDH and vice versa. This feature enables the operators to share their feeds with other production teams easily, which helps all productions that the vehicle partakes in run more smoothly while remaining highly customizable.

The intercom system ensures clear communication between the Van’s operating team and other production teams while in production, making it possible to create a bigger, more diverse Television Producing System with the participation of an additional Mobile production unit. The system comes with multi-format interfaces, expandable communication channels and expandable control bring excellent Video/Audio connections between different vehicles.

The Video/Audio control station is constructed based on practical operating experience from operators of other OBvans currently in operation. The size proportion of each stations, position of the control panel and monitors are all considered in the Van’s design to ensure a balanced weight distribution while keeping optimal performance and a pleasing aesthetics.

With this project, aside from designing and engineering problems, TVS also have to face challenges brought by the pandemic of Covid-19, which hinders many stages of the project. In the face of the world wide pandemic, TVS act quick to ensures that’s our operations were complying with all health directions given by the Prime minister and the government of Vietnam while also maintain steady progress on this project.

This turn-key vehicle was highly requested for special features for high flexibility, high productive, quick onsite setup, high stability of live production and transmission with backup.

TVS together with Turkey Hitachi Kokusai Electric were selected to provide this turn-key vehicle. We have worked closely with end user – VOV from designing phase until onsite commissioning/handover.

The Toyota^TM Highlander LE was selected to make the base platform for the system.

The interior of the vehicle was carefully designed and integrated to conform a comfortable working space for operators and journalists. The two back seats are rotatable, these seats will be used for two operators who facing the control racks. From there they can control antenna while tracking satellite link to establish the VSAT link with earth station, they also can pan/tilt/zoom the camera which located to capture the view of event. The audio mixing console is easily slide out for operation and lock when the vehicle moving.

The journalist can take the front seat during production, there are outlets which directly connected with vehicle’s system for microphone input and headphone output. There is also AC/DC outlets for laptop and Light for the journalist do his job from front seat. Of course he/she also got all these benefit when seating on the back seats.

Setting up the system for event

The vehicle comes with extractable motorized cable reels allow taking power from external sources as well as providing power to external devices. The multi-core cables allow to input and output maximum 16 audio signals at the same time.

The back panel was made to allow the system working with various ways of signal input/output, this feature bring the flexibility for co-operating with other systems on the field.

Solution for Rigging system:

For the rigging system we chose solution of self-climbing frames with long bar hoists to get the most flexible method for the system. The frames will give operators more hanging points for fixtures as well as the easier way to shift any fixtures which they’re not able to do with individual long bar hoists. This rigging solution will help to reduce time for doing the focus of fixtures and helping operator to satisfy easily any requirements from lighting directors.

The rigging system also includes 60+ pantograph which will be used for main fixtures to make the maximum flexibility for fixtures. End user can move up/down the whole frame or just move few fixtures up/down without effecting the others on the same frames.

There is one general control box for all frames and hoist, the operator can select and move just one frame or some frames at once. All frames and hoists will be set in safety limitation for daily usage.

Solution for lighting fixtures:

The lighting fixtures of the studio are divided into some major types with specific functionalities. The halogen tungsten fresnel fixtures will be used for key lighting and back lighting, the studio’s space is quite wide and high so that it requires high output power for long distance lighting. We will use 1kW/2kW/5kW halogen tungsten Fresnel to cover all stages of the area.

For soft lighting we will use LED soft lights from Philips, including: 300S and 150S, with color temperature of 3200ºK to meet match Color temp of halogen tungsten.

The cyclorama lighting is handled by LED RGBW fixtures which is able to output any color onto the cyclorama cloth as well as décor sets on the stage. The lighting director will be free to desire any background colors on any surfaces he wants.

The effect lighting is handled by three groups of fixtures. The group of 20 SL300FX units handles the color washing over all stages, the group of 20 VL3515 moving spot units handles the main gobo/color/beam effects, and the group of 24 units of ParLed SLePar180 is used for additional effects, such as: strong flash lighting/beam cross smoke…

There is also one unit of 2kW Follow Spot which is located at the back of audience area.

Solution for Dimmer and direct power system:

The system includes both dimmable and non-dimmable loads, it requires a flexible power solution for fixtures. We offer a flexible solution for dimmer system, there are 3 dimmer racks with 188 dimmer outputs.

The 30A circuits will be evenly wired to frames/hoist for only 5kW halogen tungsten Fresnel fixtures. These circuits are always dimmed. While 16A outlets are powered by dual 3kW module which can be set to Dim or Non-dim depending on the load that is plugged to the socket. The operator can power any fixture hang on frames/hoists regardless of type of fixtures, there are always dim and non-dim sockets for him to select.

The system also includes direct power socket for fog machines or non-dim fixtures, all the direct circuits are provided from DB with CB for each circuit.

The lighting control system handles more than six individual groups of fixtures:

• The halogen tungsten Fresnel (control via dimmer circuits).
• The LED softlight fixtures 300S and 150S.
• The LED RGBW Cyclorama fixtures.
• The LED ParLed.
• The Color Wash moving head units.
• The Profile Spotlight units.

The challenge of this lighting control system are the complication of control mixing of many types of fixtures. The DMX schedule musts cover all fixtures and flexibly enough for using, the operator must be free to move any fixtures to any positions on the rigging systems while there are limitation of DMX control address.

Thanks to the latest lighting console model Pallete VL, we’ve designed the control system with 8 Control Universals for the lighting system for 6 groups as well as the redundancy for additional fixtures. The operator can control any fixtures individually or group of them.

The lighting control system is fully back up, if the main console is down during the show, the backup console will handle smoothly the show until the end of it.

Hue VTV is a branch of Vietnam Television organization located in Hue city. Hue VTV was doing not only programs for VTV but also doing programs to broadcast locally.

In 2005, Hue VTV wanted to purchase an OBVan with 4 camera systems and expandable in future. TVS was chosen as main SI to work with local contractor for this project.

The challenges were limitation for budget so the Van must be converted locally to be OBVan. TVS worked closely with end user and local van factory to design the cabin of the van as well as interior layout.

We provided Hitachi SK-888 camera systems with complete CCU and control system for the van. Hitachi SK-888 camera was the next generation of successful SK-777model, the camera system satisfy all out-door production requirement of Hue VTV and very stable and durable thanks to good tropicalization.

Vinten Vision 11 tripod packages were chosen to use with SK-888 camera, these tripods can adapt very hard working conditions on the field.

At the center of van’s production system, we put Rossvideo RVS-216D vision mixer system. This vision mixer system has 16 SD-SDI inputs and 15 selectable outputs. There is one Leitch Panacea 16×4 SDI router working as signal routing core for infrastructure of the van, and it also working as the redundant for the vision mixer.

The gears of signal infrastructure are modular cards from Rossvideos like: DAs, DAC, ADC. The system was designed to able input/output both digital and analog video/audio.

The Tally system and under-monitor displays were from KromaTelecom, this tally system was integrated with vision mixer and monitor rack to provide director the signaling and name of any video sources in the system.

We chose Clearcom intercom system for this van, the system was designed with 4 separate channels for director communicate with 4 different groups. Any time the director want to join any channel together, he just need to push buttons on the panel.

The OBVan was originally designed for digital/analog SD signal and upgradable to HD. And Hue VTV has put trust in us for years to upgrade the OBVan to HD step by step. The camera system has been changed to HD model include Hitachi Z-HD5000 and Z-HD6000. The vision mixer has been changed to Rossvideo Crossover Solo, this vision mixer system has 4 frame sync with up/down conversion is very useful whenever they want to add more cameras. Thanks to the multiviewer output of the vision mixer, we just need to use a big monitor for all video sources and take out old CRT monitors.

VTV brought “Who Wants To Be a Millionaire” to Vietnam in 2005, this game show has been very famous for a long time. VTV decided to invest one new studio specialized for this game show and some others. TVS together with local contractor were chosen to provide the lighting system for this studio.

This lighting system is designed in accordance to the VTV technical requirement and product selection criteria. They are suitable for Live Performance Show & Pre-Recorded Programs such as Musical Shows, Game Shows, Talk Shows, Dramas & others. Most importantly, the studio is designed for the production of the famous and favorite game show, “Who Wants To Be a Millionaire”. The Dimmer and Lighting Control Systems are State-Of-The-Art Systems, with the latest technology for Dimming and Control. The Tungsten Studio Luminaries are carefully selected from a “Family Range” type of products to minimize the quantity and types of spares to be kept.

The entire system is planned with Ethernet base infrastructure. The Ethernet infrastructure allows future expansion with present capability to distribute and receive DMX signals. This is a proven Ethernet System for Lighting Industry as the system has been installed in many world-renowned venues, such as performing art centers and TV studios.

TV Studio Luminaires

Based on the technical requirement, the studio is designed with the intention of Game Show and the preference has been made to shoot the show at Color Temperature of 3200ºK. Hence, the fixtures proposed herein are mainly Tungsten Halogen Studio Fixtures.

The Studio Fresnel Spotlights proposed are all Pole Operation. Studio 5k, Studio 2k and Studio 1k are designed and developed as a “family” Range. Being a family range, the operation of all the Fresnel Spotlight is consistent throughout the range. The fixtures within the family range have compatible parts which simply mean less spare parts inventory.

The Studio Fresnel Spotlights are constructed from die cast bases and stainless steel bodies with scratch resistant epoxy powder paint. This will ensure that the fixtures are robust, durable and yet light weight. The fixtures with high quality Custom lenses and specially designed reflectors, provide brighter, flatter and wider spread of light output. As family range, the fixtures are designed also for easy maintenance.

The Top Cyclorama Lights proposed provide exceptional even beam distribution.

Strand Lighting’s well known Orion 4 Ground-rows are also included for bottom up cyclorama wash. Two version of Orion 4 are proposed, the “Rigid” and the “Hinged” types. The “Hinged” type is proposed for the Curve Sections of the Cyclorama. Apart from the Top Cyclorama, Ground-row, Softlight and Fresnel Spotlights, 600W Ellipsoidal Fixed Angle Profile Spotlights are also included. These fixtures can be used for special effects and gobo projections. With a precision 4-blade shutter, the beam can be shaped to suit the lighting designer’s need. The 360º Rotatable Body provides focusing and shaping of light at ease.

Pole operation Studio Softlights are extremely important in any production as they are the fixtures that provide the background lighting. The Arturo 1.25/2.5kW Softlight supplied with toggle switch to provide selection of one lamp or two lamps operation, without compromising the color temperature. The Optical System ensures shadowless indirect fill light from secondary reflector design.

Effect / Automated Luminaires

Besides the Static Tungsten Halogen Fixtures, Automated Moving Heads are included for the making of “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire” show. Two types of moving heads are proposed, the Wash Lights and the Profile Lights.

Lighting Control and Dimmer Systems

The system proposed is ACN ready. The entire control distribution is planned on Strand Shownet Networking which is TCP/IP base and ready to accept and operate when ACN is implemented. It costs absolutely no cost to the customer to adopt the ACN Control in future.

The control console proposed is the top of the line lighting control console which has excellent control features that meet most lighting designer’s requirement for Static / Dimmer Lighting Control, and also built-in with control features for moving lights and other Lighting Elements. With a Digitizer attached to it, it controls moving lights at the ease of a pen click. The Control Console utilize the Attributes Channel to control the moving lights’ functions and used only one control channel for each moving lights patched to console.

Optionally, a 510i can be attached to the Network as a Back Up unit for the console, which will seamlessly and automatically take over the control should the main console be faulty in the mid of performance or recording. This will ensure no interruption to the broadcast.

Dimmer System

The dimmer system proposed is Plug-In durable CD80SV dimmer system. The dimmer rack is a free standing, dead-front switchboard, substantially framed and enclosed with 16-gauge, formed steel panels. The Dimmer Modules to be supplied shall be fully plug-in and factory wired.

The dimmer rack features Line and load voltage regulation to minimize light output changes when the input voltage fluctuates. The dimmer system has Extensive input control capabilities, ensuring system design flexibility and ability for future system additions and upgrades. Opto-isolated Mux A and Mux B inputs are provided with individual assignment patches. The proposed dimmer system also features 99 System Wide control (SWC) memories for additional preset and backup use, using simple “snapshot” recording. 16 room (zone) by 8 preset Outlook architectural lighting presets for auditorium, front of house and other control are available. Direct control of channels and presets is possible by hand held remote programmer with specialized riggers functions.

A quantity of Contactor modules are proposed and included. In any case, any circuit that needs to be converted to a non-dim supply to moving heads or other lighting elements, by simply swapping the dimmer module at respective location to contactor module and one will have the circuits as non-dim output. The dimmer rack shall come with a built-in Ethernet connection, which allows direct UTP connection from HUB rack to dimmer system.

Suspension Rigging And Cyclorama Systems The lighting suspension system is designed to suit the present requirement for “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire” Game Show. In order to achieve the most economical and effective set up, the long hoists are proposed positioned around the round stage. There are 10m-hoists proposed as the back light hoists. For production hoist lighting hoists, 7m hoists are proposed. Right above the round stage, a Circular Truss system on Chain Hoists are proposed for the Special Effect Lighting.

A Double track Cyclorama Track System is included. The Cyclorama tracks are specially design aluminium extrusion profiles. There are dedicated curtain carriages for the cyclorama cloth. The rigging supporting structures are designed with future expansion in mind. The Structural Engineer shall design the structure that will take the load of additional hoists and fixtures.

There are an Off White Cotton Canvas Cyclorama and a Super Serge Wool Black Curtain.

9 numbers of Floor/Wall Boxes are proposed to be positioned around the Studio. These boxes are extremely essential lights need to be mounted on stands at floor level. These outlets provide dimmable and non-dim outlets.

Summary

The Entire Studio Lighting System is design to cater for various types of variety shows, with “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire”’s requirement as design background. The system is expandable and is future proof. The Control Network is A.C.N. ready and in future when A.C.N. is implemented, the system installed can adopt without any difficulty.
